Chiostro del Paradiso (Cloister of Paradise)

The Chiostro del Paradiso is one of the purest surviving expressions of Arab-Norman gothic architecture in Campania. Its defining feature is the double row of delicate white marble columns topped by acute intertwined arches that produce an airy, lace-like geometric canopy overhead. Built during the height of Amalfi's trade with Islamic ports across Alexandria and the Levant, the design reflects direct architectural dialogue with North African and Sicilian court builders.

Along the covered perimeter corridors sit remnants of medieval frescoes and six Roman-era marble sarcophagi repurposed as noble tombs. The most celebrated depicts the Rape of Proserpina, while another illustrates the Marriage of Peleus and Thetis. Five private noble funerary chapels remain along the southern wall, containing fourteenth-century Giottesque fresco fragments.

Plan on spending roughly 25 minutes inside the cloister before moving through the adjacent Basilica del Crocifisso and down into St. Andrew's crypt. Because morning light falls directly across the central garden and whitewashed arcades, photographers should aim for the 09:00 to 10:30 window before midday shadows flatten the stone textures.
